Knowledge areas tested
  1. Obtain and verify the order or requisition (STAT, routine, timed draws), positively identify the patient with required identifiers, and obtain implied, informed or expressed consent or permission from a legal guardian
  2. Communicate with patients and the care team, show cultural sensitivity and professionalism, register patients, confirm insurance and orders, and enter information into the EMR/EHR
  3. Verify testing requirements (fasting, medication, basal state), interview for special considerations (allergies, history of fainting, mastectomy, fistula), position the patient, select the venipuncture site per CLSI, and match tube stopper color to the ordered test
  4. Instruct patients on collection of non-blood specimens such as clean-catch and 24-hour urine, stool, sputum and semen
