  1. Select, assemble and inspect collection equipment: evacuated tube system, syringe, winged set, needle gauges and lengths, evacuated tube colors, additives and preservatives
  2. Follow the order of draw for venipuncture and capillary collection, fill tubes to the correct level and additive ratio, and mix additives by the correct number of inversions calc
  3. Perform venipuncture: tourniquet application and removal, palpation and final site selection, antiseptic application, anchoring the vein, needle insertion angle, removing the device and engaging the safety feature
  4. Adapt technique for patients with special needs and recognize and respond to complications (no blood flow, hematoma, petechiae, nerve pain, syncope, seizures), discontinuing the draw when needed
  5. Perform dermal (capillary) puncture with correct site and depth, provide post-procedural care and bandaging, and label all specimens correctly
