Knowledge areas tested
  1. Adhere to workplace safety and operational standards (OSHA, NIOSH, CDC, The Joint Commission, CLSI, CAP), HIPAA rules for protected health information, scope of practice and ethical standards
  2. Perform quality control for laboratory equipment, point-of-care and CLIA-waived tests: maintenance and calibration logs, test controls, refrigerator and freezer temperature monitoring, troubleshooting
  3. Identify and dispose of sharps and biohazards under the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, and follow the exposure control plan after needlesticks, blood spills or eye contamination
  4. Follow standard and transmission-based precautions (airborne, droplet, contact), hand hygiene, and correct selection, donning and doffing of personal protective equipment
  5. Recognize and respond to emergencies and give first aid for phlebotomy-related issues (syncope, excessive bleeding, falls, hypo- and hyperglycemia, CPR), and document and report incidents
