PTCB exam cost, eligibility and retakes

It costs $129 to apply for CPhT certification and take the PTCE, and every retake is a new $129 application. There is no waiting period before the second and third attempts, a six-month wait before the fourth, and after four attempts you must show PTCB approved preparation before trying again.

Who is eligible

You must live in the United States or its territories, disclose any criminal or State Board of Pharmacy actions, comply with PTCB policies, and complete one of two pathways:

Pathway 1: a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program, or completion within 60 days of applying. A pharmacy degree is accepted in place of a recognized program.
Pathway 2: at least 500 hours of equivalent work experience as a pharmacy technician, completed at the time you apply.

Applying and scheduling

Create a PTCB account and apply for certification.
Once your application is approved, PTCB emails your authorization to schedule.
Book at a Pearson test center. Arrive 30 minutes early with ID that matches the name on your PTCB account.
Plan for 2 hours: tutorial, 110-minute exam, and survey.

Retake policy

Approved preparation means one of: six months or more of tutoring by a pharmacist or PTCB CPhT (with PTCB attestation form), a formal review course or non-accredited training program, an ASHP/ACPE-accredited training program, or a pharmacy technician associate degree. PTCB states that the total number of attempts is unlimited as long as you meet these rules.

After you pass

Official results post to your PTCB account, typically within three weeks.
Your certificate is downloadable from the account, and PTCB issues a digital badge through Credly.
CPhT certification must be renewed every 2 years through PTCB.

Making the $129 count

Because each attempt costs the full fee, a failed attempt is expensive in time and money. PTCB itself warns that candidates who fail should expect to fail again unless they add preparation. Take at least one full-length timed practice test under exam conditions before you book, and fix any domain that scores well below the rest.
