What is the passing score for the PTCB exam?

You need a scaled score of 1400 to pass the PTCE. Scores range from 1000 to 1600, and PTCB does not publish a fixed percentage of correct answers, because the scale adjusts for differences in difficulty between exam forms.

Why a scaled score instead of a percentage

Different candidates see different versions of the PTCE. One version can be a little harder than another, so a fixed raw cut, such as "56 out of 80", would be unfair to whoever drew the harder form. A scaled score converts your raw result onto a common 1000-1600 range, so 1400 represents the same level of competence on every form.

That is also why PTCB does not publish a percent-correct pass mark. Any number you see online, such as "about 70%", is an estimate from third parties, not a PTCB figure.

What this means for how you practice

Since there is no official percentage, aim for a clear margin in practice rather than a borderline pass. On a bank of questions tagged to the 2026 outline, consistently scoring in the mid-70s or higher across all four domains is a sensible target before you book.

Look at domain scores, not just the total. Medications is 35% of the exam, so a weak spot there costs far more than the same weak spot in Federal Requirements at 18.75%.

Preliminary vs official results

After you finish the questions and the short survey, the screen shows an unofficial result, and the test center may give you a printed copy. PTCB describes this as typically an indication of your performance, but it is not official or final.

The official score report appears in your PTCB account, usually within three weeks. If you passed, your certificate is available to download from the same account, and your status can be checked through PTCB certification verification.

If you do not reach 1400

Wait for the official score report before reapplying. PTCB requires this.
There is no waiting period before the second and third attempts.
The fourth attempt requires a six-month wait.
After four attempts, you must show PTCB evidence of approved preparation, such as a formal review course or six months of tutoring by a pharmacist or CPhT, before applying again.
Each attempt is a new application with its own fee.
