PTCB vs ExCPT: the two pharmacy technician exams compared

The PTCE from PTCB has 90 questions (80 scored) in 1 hour 50 minutes and passes at 1400 on a 1000-1600 scale. The ExCPT from NHA has 120 questions (100 scored) in 2 hours 10 minutes and passes at 390 out of 500. Both lead to a CPhT credential; which one you need depends on your state board and employer.

The PTCE weights clinical drug knowledge most heavily: Medications is 35% of the exam. The ExCPT is built around the dispensing workflow, with 43 of its 100 scored items in the Dispensing Process domain.

How to choose

Check your state board of pharmacy first. Registration and certification rules for technicians vary by state, and some name a specific exam or accept either.
Ask your employer or the program you trained in. Many training programs prepare students for one exam in particular, and some employers pay for one of them.
If both are accepted, pick the one that fits your strengths. Strong drug knowledge favors the PTCE; strong day-to-day dispensing experience lines up well with the ExCPT.
Look at eligibility. PTCB requires a PTCB-recognized education or training program or at least 500 hours of equivalent work experience. Check NHA for its own eligibility rules.

Can you study for both at once?

Largely, yes. Both exams cover drug classes and top drugs, federal law and controlled substances, patient safety, and pharmacy calculations. The difference is emphasis. If you prepare for the PTCE and later sit the ExCPT, spend extra time on prescription intake, workflow and compounding. If you go the other way, spend extra time on drug interactions, side effects, indications and storage.

Neither body publishes a difficulty comparison. They weight content differently, so which feels easier depends on your background.

Do both exams give the CPhT title?

Yes. Both PTCB and NHA award a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential. Whether your state accepts a given one is up to the state board.
