How many questions are on the NREMT EMT exam?
The NREMT EMT exam has between 70 and 120 questions. It is a computerized adaptive test, so it stops as soon as it can make a pass or fail decision with 95% confidence, and 10 of the questions you see are unscored pilot items. You have 2 hours.
What is the passing score for the NREMT EMT exam?
The passing point on the NREMT EMT exam is 950 on a 100-1500 scale. It is not a percentage: the adaptive exam decides whether your ability is above or below the entry-level standard, and only candidates who fail receive a scaled score and breakdown.
The NREMT EMT test plan (2025 specifications)
Since spring 2025 the NREMT EMT exam follows specifications based on the 2023 Basic Level Support Practice Analysis: Scene Size-up and Safety 15-19%, Primary Assessment 39-43%, Secondary Assessment 5-9%, Patient Treatment and Transport 20-24%, and Operations 10-14%. The five domains contain 28 job tasks.

The NREMT EMT exam stops as soon as it can make a pass or fail decision with 95% confidence after at least 70 questions. If it cannot, it keeps going until you reach 120 questions or the 2-hour limit. Stopping early can mean a clear pass or a clear fail, so the length tells you nothing on its own.

The National Registry points candidates to their textbook, the current AHA CPR and ECC guidelines, and the National EMS Education Standards; four focused weeks after finishing your course is a common plan.
NREMT retake rules: waiting period, attempts and remedial training
If you fail the NREMT EMT exam you can reapply as soon as results post, but you must wait 15 days from your last exam date to test again. You have six chances to pass, and after three failed attempts you must complete remedial education before a fourth. Each attempt is a new $104 application.

Patient Treatment and Transport on the NREMT EMT exam
Patient Treatment and Transport is 20-24% of the NREMT EMT exam, the second-largest domain. Its seven job tasks cover managing the airway and ventilation, the cardiovascular system, musculoskeletal motion restriction, medication administration, special populations, transport, and communicating patient information.
