What is the passing score for the NREMT EMT exam?

The passing point on the NREMT EMT exam is 950 on a 100-1500 scale. It is not a percentage: the adaptive exam decides whether your ability is above or below the entry-level standard, and only candidates who fail receive a scaled score and breakdown.

Why it is not a percentage

On an adaptive exam, two candidates can answer different numbers of questions at different difficulty levels. Counting correct answers would not compare them fairly. Instead, the exam estimates your ability and asks one question, in the National Registry's words: has the candidate reached entry-level competency or not?

The 950 point is the scaled position of that standard. The National Registry sets the standard through a formal study with a panel of EMS subject-matter experts, and the board of directors approves it. It is reviewed whenever new exam specifications take effect, as they did in 2025.

What "answering questions right" means on a CAT

Because the exam gets harder as you answer correctly, most candidates finish having answered a lot of questions they found difficult. That is expected and says little about the result. Percent-correct targets from fixed-length practice tests do not transfer directly to the real exam.

A better goal in practice is steady performance across all five domains on questions pitched at the level of the real exam, with no domain well below the rest. Primary Assessment at 39-43% of the exam is the one that decides most results.

Reading a failing score report

The report places your result on the 100-1500 scale with 950 marked, so you can see how far you were from the standard.
It shows how you did in each content area. Put your next study block into the lowest areas first.
You may reapply as soon as results post, but you must wait 15 days from your last exam date to test again.
If you think a specific item was outside EMT scope, you can request a rescoring review within 30 days of the official score release.
