NREMT retake rules: waiting period, attempts and remedial training

If you fail the NREMT EMT exam you can reapply as soon as results post, but you must wait 15 days from your last exam date to test again. You have six chances to pass, and after three failed attempts you must complete remedial education before a fourth. Each attempt is a new $104 application.

Remedial education after three attempts

The National Registry accepts any one of these three options:

The EMT 20-credit National Competency Component from the NCCP model.
A State or CAPCE-approved EMT refresher course.
The 20 credits met through any state-approved education program.

The two-year clock keeps running

Your initial course is valid for two years from its completion month; for example, a course completed in January 2024 was valid until January 31, 2026. Taking remedial education does not extend this date. If you are several attempts in and close to the deadline, plan your remaining attempts around it.

The handbook sets six chances in total. If you use all six, contact the National Registry or your state EMS office about what is required before you can test again.

Using your failing score report

A failed attempt comes with a scaled score on the 100-1500 scale, with 950 marked, and a breakdown by content area.
Spend the 15-day wait on the lowest content areas, not on rereading everything.
If you believe a specific item was outside EMT scope, you can file a rescoring request within 30 days of the official score release.

Before booking the next attempt

Take a full timed practice session of up to 120 questions.
Check your weakest domain against the test plan weights; Primary Assessment is 39-43% of the exam.
Confirm your course completion date and ATT window so a retake does not fall outside them.
