How many questions are on the NREMT EMT exam?

The NREMT EMT exam has between 70 and 120 questions. It is a computerized adaptive test, so it stops as soon as it can make a pass or fail decision with 95% confidence, and 10 of the questions you see are unscored pilot items. You have 2 hours.

Why the number of questions varies

The exam adapts to you. After an initial set of items, the computer gives you questions aimed at or above its current estimate of your ability. Once it can say with 95% confidence that you are above or below the passing standard, and you have answered at least 70 items, it ends.

If your performance stays close to the standard, the exam keeps going until it reaches 120 questions or the 2-hour limit. A long exam does not mean you are failing; it means the result was close enough to need more evidence.

Item types

All items are scored right or wrong, with no partial credit. The National Registry lists five types:

Multiple choice: one correct answer out of four.
Multiple response: two correct out of five options, or three correct out of six.
Options table: classify or identify several options in a table against given criteria.
Build list: put the options in the order the item asks for.
Drag and drop: place options into categories.

What the questions cover

Since the exam relaunched in spring 2025, questions are written against 28 job tasks in five domains. Primary Assessment alone is 39-43% of the exam.

Pacing

120 questions in 120 minutes is one minute per question if the exam runs to the maximum. Aim to be comfortably inside that pace, because you cannot know in advance whether you will stop at 70 or go to 120. The unscored questions look the same as scored ones, so answer every question as if it counts.
